Mentat DS Syrup: Uses, Ingredients, Dose, Side Effects

Mentat DS Syrup is a proprietary Ayurvedic medicine manufactured by Himalaya Healthcare Ltd. It channelizes mental energy. The natural ingredients in Mentat DS improve mental quotient, memory span and concentration ability.

It also reduces the level of tribulin, an endogenous monoamine oxidase inhibitor that is elevated during anxiety. The calming effects of Mentat DS is beneficial in treating insomnia and convulsions.

Due to its anti-cholinesterase – anti-spasmodic, dopaminergic – neuroprotective – important neuro – transmitter in the brain, adaptogenic and anti – oxidant properties, Mentat DS is useful as an adjuvant in the treatment of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and post-stroke aphasia – speech disorder.
It is a sugar free formula recommended for patient suffering from hyperglycemia, diabetes mellitus and for calorie conscious individuals.

Indication of Mentat DS Syrup

Memory & learning disorders – attention fluctuation, concentration impairment, language & learning disability.
Behavioural disorders – hyper-kinetic states, asocial behaviour, temper tantrums, aggressive behaviour, enuresis.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder -ADHD
Anxiety & stress related disorder.
Mental fatigue
Senile dementia
As an adjuvant in Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s disease.
Supportive therapy in mild to moderate mental retardation.
As an adjuvant in epilepsy and post-stroke aphasia.

Dosage, Special precautions

Dosage

Children – ½ tsp twice a day or as directed by the physician.
Adults – 1 tsp twice a day or as directed by the physician.
A higher dosage may be recommended for more severe and chronic conditions and for older children.

Diet To Follow

Have more of Ghee, coconut oil, Sunflower seed, almond, taro root, flaxseed oil, soyabean, pistachio,
Broccoli, carrots, chard, nuts, papaya, pumpkin, red peppers
Flax seeds, walnut, tofu, brussel sprout, cauliflower, winter squash, fish oil, egg oil, krill oil, chia seeds, camelia are fine to take.

Diet To avoid:
There are no diet restrictions. Please avoid all types of junk foods, excessive non veg foods, try to avoid or limit alcohol and smoking. Avoid aerated drinks.
Please prefer homemade food wherever possible.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Special precautions

Mentat DS may enhance the effect of general anaesthesia. Therefore, a brief washout period of 2 weeks is recommended prior to elective surgery.
Therapeutic drug monitoring may also be required in epileptic patients.

How long to use?
This product can be used for a period of 2 – 3 months of time, based on your doctor’s advice.

Brahmi – Bacopa monnieri – 288 mg – It is known for its benefit in improving intelligence and memory.
Mandukaparni – Centella asiatica – 140 mg – It is used as a rasayana and improves intelligence.
Ashwagandha – Withania somnifera – 104 mg – It enhances all aspects of cognitive function.
Vishnukrantha – Evolvulus alsinoides – 104 mg
Jatamamsi – Nardostachys jatamansi – 104 mg – It is known to improve memory and to ease depression and stress.
Tagara – Valeriana wallichii – 100 mg
Vidanga – Embelica ribes – 100 mg
Vatada – Prunus amygdalus – 100 mg
Vacha – Acorus calamus – 84 mg – It is known to improve speech and intelligence. 
Haritaki – Terminalia chebula – 72 mg
Amalaki – Embelica officinalis – 72 mg – It is one of the intelligence promoters.
Guduchi – Tinospora cordifolia – 72 mg
Jyothishmati – Celestrus paniculatus – 64 mg – It is known to improve memory and intelligence.
Shyonaka – Oroxylum indicum – 64 mg
Kapikacchu – Mucuna puriens – 3.6 mg – It improves strength and immunity and is useful in various neurological conditions, especially Parkinson’s disease.
Sukshmaila – Elettaria cardamomum – 3.6 mg
Arjuna – Terminalia arjuna – 3.6 mg
Shatapushpa – Foeniculum vulgare  3.6 mg
Vidari – Ipomea digitata – 3.6 mg – It improves strength and immunity.
Shunti – Zingiber officinale – 2.8 mg
Vibhitaki – Terminalia bellerica – 2.8 mg
Jatiphala – Myristica fragrans – 2.8 mg
Lavanga – Syzygium aromaticum – 2.0 mg

Side effects of Mentat DS Syrup

There are no known side effects with this medicine.
However, it is best to use this medicine under medical supervision.
Store in a cool dry place, away from sunlight.
Keep out of reach and sight of children.                                                                 
Seek your doctor’s advice for its usage during pregnancy.
This product can be safely used during lactation period and in children for a limited period of few weeks time.

Habit forming

Is this medicine habit forming? Does it create dependence? Can we stop it after a few months of usage?
This medicine is not habit forming. After using for the prescribed period, your doctor would gradually decrease the dose and eventually stop it. Follow your doctor’s instructions for gradual decrease of dose and stopping. Usually it does not cause any ill effects.
