Vasishta Rasayanam – Uses, Dose, Ingredients, Side Effects

Vasishta Rasayanam is an Ayurvedic medicine in herbal jam form (like Chyawanprash). It is mainly used for the treatment of cough, cold and such other respiratory tract infections.

Promotes complextion, longevity as well as strength

Context

Context:
This medicine is explained in Ashtanga Hrudayam, Chikitsa Sthana, in Kasa Chapter.
Kasa refers to cold, cough and respiratory infection conditions.
This medicine is explained right after explaining another famous Ayurvedic herbal jam (linctus) called Agastya Rasayana.
The author ends Vasista Rasayanam by saying that it is similar to Agastya Rasayan in quality and indications, and Vasishta is slightly more beneficial than Agasthya Rasayana.

The term rasayana signifies that this medicine is not only very useful for respiratory conditions, but it is also very useful anti ageing medicine and has rejuvenation properties.

Dose, duration of use, shelf life

Dosage:
Adult dose: 6 – 12 grams, once or twice a day, before food or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.
Pediatric dose:
For children above 1 – 3 years – 1 gram, once or twice a day.
4- 8 years – 3 grams once or twice a day.
9 – 16 years – 5 grams once or twice a day

How long to take?
It can be taken for a period of 1 – 3 months of time, based on doctors advice. For long term use, the dose is decreased gradually.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Shelf life:
1 year from the date of manufacturing.
After opening the jar, try to empty it within 3 – 4 months of time.

Dashamoola – group of 10 herbs
Bala – Country mallow (root) – Sida cordifolia
Murva – Marsdenia tenacissima – Root
Haridra – Turmeric
Daruharidra – Tree turmeric – Berberis aristata
Pippali – Long pepper fruit – Piper longum
Pippalimoola – Long pepper root – Piper longum
Patha – Cyclea peltata
Ashwagandha – Indian ginseng – Withania somnifera
Apamarga – Achyranthes aspera
Svagupta – Velvet Bean (seed) – Mucuna pruriens
Ativisha – Aconitum heterophyllum
Amruta – Giloy – Tinospora cordifolia
Balabilva – unripe bael fruit
Trivrit – Operculina turpethum
Dantimoola  – Root of Baliospermum montanum
Chitraka – Leadwort – Plumbago zeylanica
Payasya – Ipomoea mauritiana
Kutaja – Bark of Holarrhena antidysenterica
Himsra – Capparis sepiaria
Beejaka – Asana – Indian Kino tree (heart wood) – Pterocarpus marsupium

Pathya – Haritaki – Chebulic myrobalan – Terminalia chebula – fruit rind – 52.8 kg
Yava – Barley – 6.144 kg

The above mix of herbs in coarse powder form is taken in a wide mouthed vessel, added with 8 parts of water, boiled in mild fire, till the barley is cooked properly (or till the total quantity reduces to a quarter of the water quantity).

It is filtered. Added with Jeerna Guda (old jaggery) – 4.8 kg and 768 g / ml of each of Sesame oil, ghee and amla fruit juice extract.
Heating is continued till it gains semi-solid consistency.
It is taken out of fire, allowed to cool down.
After cooling down, it is added with
1.536 g of honey
192 g of fine powder of long pepper fruit
144 gram of Trijata (cinnamon, cinnamon leaf and cardamom)
The contents are mixed well. Stored in a mud pot in a heap of grains (Dhanyarashi) for a month and consumed similar to Agastya rasayana.

Original Sanskrit Verse:
दशमूलं बलां मूर्वां हरिद्रे पिप्पली-द्वयम् ।
पाठाश्वगन्धापामार्ग स्वगुप्तातिविषामृताः ॥ १३३ ॥
बाल-बिल्वं त्रिवृद्दन्तीमूलं पत्त्रं च चित्रकात् ।
पयस्यां कुटजं हिंस्रां पुष्पं सारं च बीजकात् ॥ १३४ ॥
बोटस्थविर भल्लात विकङ्कत शतावरीः ।
पूतिकरञ्ज शम्याक चन्द्रलेखा सहाचरम् ॥ १३५ ॥
शौभाञ्जनक निम्ब त्वग् इक्षुरं च पलांशकम् ।
पथ्यासहस्रं सशतं यवानां चाढक-द्वयम् ॥ १३६ ॥
पचेद् अष्टगुणे तोये यवस्वेदे ऽवतारयेत् ।
पूते क्षिपेत् सपथ्ये च तत्र जीर्ण गुडात् तुलाम् ॥ १३७ ॥
तैलाज्यधात्री रसतः प्रस्थं प्रस्थं ततः पुनः ।
अधिश्रयेन् मृदाव् अग्नौ दर्वीलेपे ऽवतार्य च ॥ १३८ ॥
शीते प्रस्थद्वयं क्षौद्रात् पिप्पलीकुडवं क्षिपेत् ।
चूर्णीकृतं त्रिजाताच्च त्रिपलं निखनेत् ततः ॥ १३९ ॥
धान्ये पुराणकुम्भस्थं मासं खादेच् च पूर्ववत् ।
रसायनं वसिष्ठोक्तम् एतत् पूर्व-गुणाधिकम् ॥ १४० ॥

Side effects, manufacturer, package

Side effects:
There are no known side effects with this medicine. However, a very high dosage may cause loose stools.
It is best to seek medical advice before taking it during pregnancy and for pediatric use.
It can be administered during lactation period.
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are diabetic. In diabetic patients, only if the blood sugar is under good control, then this medicine can be given.

  1. Is it good for irregular coughs lasting for months? Can it be taken along with churnas like sitopaladi churna…?
