Vrihat Purnachandra Ras – Benefits, Dosage, Ingredients, Side Effects

Vrihat Purnachandra Rasis an Ayurvedic medicine in tablet form, used in anti ageing therapy, digestive disorders etc.  This medicine should only be taken under strict medical supervision. This medicine is most commonly used in north Indian Ayurvedic practice.

Uses and effect on dosha

Vrihat Purnachandra Ras Uses: 

  • It improves strength, immunity, sexual power, intelligence,  delays ageing.
  • It is used in treatment of cough, cold, asthma, anorexia, abdominal colic pain, low back ache, heart burn, indigestion, gastritis, fistula, jaundice, anemia, urinary tract disorders, gout.

Effect on Tridosha – Balances Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Dose and duration of use

Brihat Purnachandra Ras dosage:
125 – 250 mg once or twice a day, before or after food or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor. It is advised along with betel leaf juice.

How long to use: It is administered for a period of one month.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Ingredients and method of preparation

Vrihat Purnachandra Ras ingredients, how to make:
20 g of each of
Suta – Purified and processed Mercury
Shuddha Gandhaka – Herbal purified Sulphur
Loha Bhasma – Bhasma prepared from Iron
Abhraka Bhasma – Purified and processed Mica
Rajata Bhasma – Bhasma of Silver
Vanga Bhasma – Tin Calx
10 g of each of
Swarna Bhasma – Bhasma of Gold
Tamra Bhasma – Bhasma prepared from Copper
Kamsya Bhasma – Bhasma (Calx) prepared from Bronze
Jatiphala – Nutmeg (fruit) – Myristica fragrans
Chandrapushpa – Lavanga – Clove – Syzygium aromaticum
Ela – Cardamom – Elettaria cardamomum
Bhringaraja – Eclipta alba
Jiraka – Cumin – Cuminum cyminum
Karpoora – Camphor – Cinnamomum camphora
Vanita – Callicapra macrophylla
Musta – Nut grass (root) – Cyperus rotundus
Juice extract of  Kumari – Aloe vera – quantity sufficient for grinding
Water decoction of  Triphala – quantity sufficient for grinding
Juice extract of  Kebuka – Costus speciosus – quantity sufficient for grinding

Purified Mercury and Sulphur are ground to form a black mass, added with rest of the powdered ingredients, ground with the juice extracts and decoctions to obtain a semisolid mass. This is wrapped in castor leaves, covered under a heap of paddy for a day and then ground to a mass suitable for making pills. Pills are prepared.

There are no recorded side effects with this medicine.
It should be taken under strict medical supervision. Take this medicine only if your Ayurveda doctor has prescribed it to you.
Store in a cool dry place, in an air tight container, away from direct sunlight.
Use this medicine only till the prescribed time and in the prescribed dose only.
Seek your doctor’s advice for its usage during pregnancy, lactation and in children.
Keep out of reach and sight of children.

  1. i have temporomendibular joint pain. muscles are weak. i can not open my mouth much. i cant eat anything hard. i eat soft khichdi and idli. Muscles go into spasm near my ear. other medicines (such as maha rasnadi kashayam, ashwagandha vati, yoga raaj guggula) are not helping much . problem comes up again and again. I feel i can take this medicine as it will strengthen nerves and muscles. Please guide me.

    do we take this medicine with buttermilk or normarl water.is milk or honey is compulsory for same.
