Trivrit Lehyam: Benefits, Dose, Side Effects, How To Use, Ingredients

Trivrit Lehyam is an effective Ayurvedic medicine for constipation. It is in herbal jam  form. It is also known as Trivritadi Lehyam and Trivrilleham. It is mainly used in Ayurvedic Panchakarma treatment called Virechana.

Uses

Trivrit Lehyam Benefits: 

  • It helps to relieve constipation,  this is a first rate purgative with no bad taste.
  • It is good for heart.
  • It is used in Ayurvedic Panchakarma treatment called Virechana.

Caution and Synonyms

Caution: This medicine should be taken strictly under medical supervision only.
Synonyms: Trivrilleham, Trivrith Lehyam, Trivrit Leham

Dosage


3 – 6 grams once or two times  a day after food or before food, or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.
It is administered along with honey, milk or warm water.

For purgation it is taken between 9 – 11 a.m. to be following up with frequent drafts of hot water. Keep in mind that Virechana is done only after Snehana and Swedana, as advised by Ayurvedic doctor.
As daily laxative, this is taken 5-10 grams after dinner.

Can this product be taken daily for many weeks?
No. It can be habit forming on the long term. It is not good to continue this for more than a few weeks time. Please consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Other Indications

Thrivrit Leha usage in skin disorders:
It is advised for Virechana, which targets skin disorders with high Pitta such as eczema, psoriasis etc.
On a daily basis, it is advised in a small dose of 3 – 5 grams for skin diseases.

Side Effects

Its dosage varies from person to person based on strength of digestive system.
Slight overdose may lead to severe diarrhoea.
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are diabetic. In diabetic patients, only if the blood sugar is under good control, then this medicine can be given

Trivrit Lehyam Ingredients:
Trivrit (Operculina turpethum) water decoction is prepared.
It is added with Trivrit powder, and sugar, heated to semisolid consistency. Allowed to cool down.
After that it is added with honey and Trijata (Cinnamon, Cardamom and Cinnamon leaf (Cinnamomum tamala)

Shloka- Sanskrit Verse

त्रिवृत्कल्ककषायाभ्यां साधितं ससितो हिम: ।
मधुत्रिजातसंयुक्तो लेहो हृद्यं विरेचनम् ॥
trivṛtkalkakaṣāyābhyāṃ sādhitaṃ sasito hima: |
madhutrijātasaṃyukto leho hṛdyaṃ virecanam ||

Method of Preparation


Trivirit – Operculina turpethum – 25 grams is added with 400 ml of water, boiled and reduced to 100 ml, filtered.

To this 100 ml Trivrit Kashaya, 25 grams of Trivrit powder is again added, along with 50 grams of sugar. Mixed well.
To this, 25 ml of honey and
5 grams of each of cinnamon, cardamom and cinnamon leaves fine powder is added. The mix is mixed well and stored in air tight container.

  1. Why is it preferred over triphala kwath for Virechana therapy ? You haven’t named its manufacturers in the article as well. Do include.

    • Hi I undergone virechan once a year…. During the course it’s very hard to eat/swallow thrivruthu lehyam….. Kindly suggest me how to use it to make it ease for swolling….

    Sankh bhasma has got stool binding property,where as trivrit leha good for constipation.Can one with severe acidity and constipation use both sankh bhasma and trivrit leha together?

  5. I am doin virechana…..my dr prescribed to take 50g of this lehyam on the last…..but don’t know how n wat time to take it couldnt ct the dr now….anybody knows here???
