Kushmanda Rasayana (Avaleha) Uses, Dose, Side Effects And Ingredients

Kushmanda rasayana is a famous Ayurvedic medicine in herbal jam form. It is a nourishing Ayurvedic medicine, used in respiratory conditions, to improve immunity and strength. It is also known by the terms Kooshmanda rasayana, Kushmanda avalaeha, Kushmanda lehyam, Kushmandavaleha, Kooshmandavaleha, Kusmandarasayanam.
Kooshmanda refers to ash gourd, which is the main ingredient of this preparation. Avaleha or lehyam refers to its herbal jam form. Rasayana – refers to its rejuvenation property.

Uses

Kushmanda rasayana uses: 
Kushmanda Avaleha is used in the treatment of bleeding disorders, emaciation, chronic respiratory conditions requiring nutrition and strength, vomitting.
It is usually administered after a person has recovered from fever, to improve strength.
It is also used along with or after anti tuberculosis treatment to improve general health, strength and weight. It helps to minimize the side effects of anti tuberculosis medications by supporting liver and improving digestion and providing much needed respiratory strength.
It brings about rejuvenation, improves strength.
Useful in panic attacks.

Dosage

Kushmanda Avaleha dose: 
5 – 15 grams to be administered along with water or milk, before or after food, once or twice a day, or at intervals or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.
Dosage for children below 5 years of age – 1 – 2 grams, once or twice a day, along with a teaspoon of honey or warm water / milk.
Dosage for children between 5 – 12 years of age – 5 grams once or twice a day along with a teaspoon of honey or warm water / milk.

Adult dose for gaining weight –
1 tablespoon, mixed with 1 teaspoon (small spoon) of ghee,  2 times a day after food for 2 months time. Drink half a cup of lukewarm water, after taking this. 

Child dose (5-15 years) dose for gaining weight –
1 teaspoon mixed with 1 teaspoon (small spoon) of ghee,  2 times a day after food for 2 months time. Drink half a cup of lukewarm water, after taking this.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Side effects

There are no known side effects with this medicine.
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are diabetic. In diabetic patients, only if the blood sugar is under good control, then this medicine can be given.

Kushmanda lehyam ingredients: 
Kushmanda – ash gourd – Benincasa hispida – Fruit – 4.8 kg
Ghee – 768 grams
Sugar – 4.8 kg
Pippali – Piper longum – Fruit – 96 g
Ginger – Zingiber officinale – Rhizome – 96 g
White caraway – Cuminum cyminum – Fruit – 96 g
Cinnamon – Cinnamomum zeylanicum – Stem bark – 24 g
Patra – Cinnamomum tamala – Leaves – 24 g
Cardamom – Elettaria cardamomum – Seeds – 24 g
Black pepper – Piper nigrum – Fruit – 24 g
Coriander – Coriandrum sativum – Seeds – 24 g
Honey – 384 g

Method of Preparation

Ash gourd is cut into pieces, skin and seeds are removed, boiled in small quantity of water, squeezed to obtain juice.The pulp is fried in ghee. The juice is added with the fried pulp and sugar. It is further heated to semisolid consistency. Then fine powder of ingredients from Pippali to Coriander are added and mixed well to form homogeneous mixture. After cooling down, honey is added and mixed well. This preparation is to be made in copper vessel. It is packed in a tightly closed containers.

Shelf life

3 years from the date of manufacturing. Once the bottle is opened, it is best to finish it within 4 – 5 months of time.

  2. Dear Dr., my daughter aged 13.5 years , 5.5 ft tall and 50 kg weight , very active girl, studious and intelligent . She is yet to attain puberty. She had tonsillitis and got treated through homeopathy. But now she gets running nose very frequently and large amount of sputum gets generated . She has been taking antibiotics and nasal spray for this. Once a course is administered it sunsides but again repeats after a month or so. We are in Dubai and the climatic conditions are relatively humid and has extreme hot or cold . Switching between air conditioned room into hot summer outside and then immediately getting into an AC vehicle and therefore the switching between climate is quite often. Can you please suggest me whether the product mentioned here could be a remedy, if so what dosage and the availability in Dubai.

    • no, you can not use this medicine in the condition what you have told. it is used to strengthen the respiratory system in conditions like tuberculosis. there are lot more medicines which can help you out. since they all are to be taken under medical supervision, it is better to consult your nearest Ayurvedic doctor.

    I have heard that primary use kushmanda-rasayana is in increasing intelligence and memory, is it a powerful medhya?

    Also I have heard that drinking 2-3 glasses of ash gourd juice is really good for brain, if so when to take it, in the morning empty stomach or after food?

  16. If we take 4.8kg of ash gourd for making the rasayana then after removing its skin and seeds the actual weight will be less . So should we take the actual weight as 4.8 kg?

    Also instead of lehya can we use it in powder form(by making the sugar syrup very thick ) ? Will that change It’s effectiveness?

  17. I prepared kushmand Avleh at home. took me about 3 days to prepare. weight of kushmand was 4.2 kgs. But weight actual -after removing seeds and upper skin was only 2.5 kgs, Which is to be taken as input weight.. ingredients must be constantly stirred whi le boiling,
