Chukku Thailam: Uses, Dose, Ingredients, Side effects

Chukku Thailam is a classical Siddha medicine in oil form manufactured by SKM Siddha & Ayurveda Company India Ltd., Erode- Tamil Nadu. It is best used for treating headache.

Ingredients

Ingredients of Chukku Thailam:
Thole neekiya chukku – Shunti – Ginger – Zingiber officinale – 47 % – It balances Kapha dosha.
Nalla ennai – Tila taila – Sesame oil – Sesamum indicum – 47 %
Sitraraththai – Sugandhimoola – Alpinia calcarata – 0.25 %
Chukku – Shunti – Ginger – Zingiber officinale – 0.25 %
Milagu – Maricha – Black pepper – Piper nigrum – 0.25 % – It removes toxins , heals, stimulates organs.
Thippili – Pippali – Long pepper – Piper longum – 0.25 %
Koraikizhangu – Musta – Cyperus rotundus – 0.25 %
Manchitti [sevvallikodi] – Manjishta – Indian madder – Rubia cordifolia – 0.25 %
Kadukkai – Haritaki – Chebulic myrobalan – Terminalia chebula – 0.25 %
Nellikkai – Amalaki – Gooseberry – Emblica officinalis – 0.25 %
Thaanrikkai – Vibhitaki – Belleric myrobalan – Terminalia bellerica – 0.25 %
Thanneer vittan kizhangu – Satavari – Asparagus racemosus – 0.25 %
Agil kattai – Agaru – Aquillaria agallocha – 0.25 % – It is used in treating diseases related to ear, nose, throat, asthma, cough etc. 
Erukkam ver pattai – Arka – Calotropis gigantea – 0.25 %
Katuka rohini – Katuka rohini – Picrorhiza kurroa – 0.25 %
Kottam – Kusta – Saussurea lappa – 0.25 % – It is used for external application in headache, tooth ache, osteo-arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis and balding.
Kodivelli ver – Chitraka – Plumbago zeylanica – 0.25 %
Devadaru – Devadaru – Cedrus deodara – 0.25 % – External application of paste of Deodar helps to relieve pain, swelling, inflammation, cleansing infected wounds, and in skin disorders associated with pain and itching.
Sandhana kattai – Chandana – Sandal wood – Santalum album – 0.25 % – It is useful to control anger (by balancing Pitta). Hence useful in psychiatric disorders. 
Vellai kungiliyam or karum kungiliyam – Shaala – Shorea robusta – 0.25 % Chevviyam – Chavya – Piper cubeba – 0.25 %
Aamanakku ver – Eranda – Castor – Ricinus communis – 0.25 %
Loththira pattai – Lodhra – Symplocos racemosa – 0.25 % – It has analgesic activity.
Pereecham pazham [kottai neekkiyadhu] – Kharjura – Phoenix dactylifera – 0.25 %
Thiraatchai [ularndhadhu] – Draksha – Vitis vinifera – 0.25 %
Indhuppu – Saindhava lavana – Rock salt – 0.25 % – By providing all the essential trace elements, it is a fast nervous stimulant, relaxes body and mind, it greatly improves the respiratory, circulatory and nervous systems to a significant extent.

Indication

Indications of Chukku Thailam:

  • Massaged on the body in cephalgia of before Chandiravarththam [evening headache], Sooriyavarththam [morning headache] & Amavadham [rheumatic affections].
  • Used as Nasyam [nasal drops] in thalaivali [headaches] & peenisam [sinusitis].
  • Gargled with some water in dental diseases [pal noigal] such as- dhantavayu [odontalgia] & palaranai [dental caries].
  • Used as ear drops [2 drops] in kaadhu vali [ear ache].
  • Applied to scalp in thalai vali [headaches].
  • In cases of marbu kozhai [cold], thondai kattu [sore throat] & kural kammal [hoarseness of voice]- this is very effective when used as head bath oil.
  • Post viral fever, when the patient complains of body, muscle and joint pains
    Bursitis,  
  • Bursitis trochanterica,
  • Shoulder dislocation pain

Application on feet

Oil application over feet

Precaution if you apply this oil over feet:
If you apply this oil on feet, make sure to wash off thouroughly with water or wipe off with cloth. The oil can make you slippery while walking.
After applying, make sure there are no oil spills on the floor. This can make the floor slippery.

Direction for use

Directions for use of Chukku Thailam:
Used for massaging purpose & as a bath oil, also used as nasal & ear drops.
Or as directed by the physician.

Side effects and package

Side effects of Chukku Thailam:

  • There are no recorded side effects with this medicine.
  • For external use only.
  • Nasya & Karnapoorana should be done under strict medical supervision.

Bottle of 100 ml, 250 ml & 500 ml.

During pregnancy, lactation

If you were using this oil before pregnancy without any allergic reaction, you can continue using this oil even during pregnancy.
If you have not used this product before and wish to use it during pregnancy, better to consult a doctor because it can cause skin allergy in some rare cases.
It is generally considered as safe to use during lactation, however consult your doctor for the right advice.

Can this product be applied after steam therapy?
No. Oil is best applied before steam therapy. This is as per basic Ayurvedic principles.
