Punarnavarishta Uses, Dose, Ingredients, Side Effects

Punarnavarishta is a liquid Ayurveda medicine, used in the treatment of inflammatory disorders, liver disorders associated with itching etc.  It contains about 5 – 7 % of self generated natural alcohol in it. This self generated alcohol and the water present in the product acts as a media to deliver water and alcohol soluble the active herbal components to the body.

It is an excellent liver tonic, useful in fatty liver changes, chronic alcoholism, jaundice, anemia, inflammatory disorders, cardiac disorders, anemia, splenomegaly.
Useful in relieving swollen face, puffiness around eyes, pedal edema, inflammation in intestine

Serious type of oedema
Splenic enlargement – Pliha

Obstinate urinary disorders – Meha

Fistula- in- ano – Bhagandara
The six varieties of Jathara Rogas (obstinate abdominal disease)
Cough – Kasa Asthma – Svasa
Sprue syndrome – Grahani
Obstinate skin diseases, – Kushta
Itching – Kandu
Aggravation of vayu in the limbs
Constipation
Hiccup – Hikka
A type of leucoderma and – Kilasa
A serious type of Jaundice – Halimaka
It endows the patient with complexion, strength, longevity, Ojas (essence of all the 7 Dhatus and Tejas (Lustre).

Doctors also use this for the treatment of
Inflammation disorders,
Urinary tract infections.

It is useful to promote strength of bones and joints.
It acts as an excellent anti inflammatory and analgesic mediicne.
It is used for the treatment of ankle pain, ankle twitch, slipped disc, sprain, back spasm, backache, back injury, stiffness of muscles, Coccyx pain

Pain related to SLE

Diet

Avoid deep fried foods, heavy-to-digest non veg foods, fast foods and aerated drinks, smoking and excess alcohol. These can irritate stomach and intestinal lining. These also may increase Tridosha.

Dose, duration of use

Punarnaravistam dosage:
12 – 24 ml. one or two times a day, usually advised after food.
If needed, equal quantity of water can be added before consumption.

How long to use?
Based on doctor’s prescription, this medicine can be used for several months.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Ingredients and method of preparation

Punarnavadyaristam ingredients and method of manufacturing: 
3 Palas of each
Sveta Punarnava – Spreading Hogweed – Boerhavia diffusa
Rakta Punarnava – Spreading Hogweed – Boerhavia diffusa
Bala – Country mallow (root) – Sida cordifolia
Atibala – Abutilon indicum
Patha – Cyclea peltata
Danti – Baliospermum montanum
Guduchi – Tinospora cordifolia
Chitraka – Plumbago zeylanica and
Nidigdhika – Brinjal Eggplant – Solanum melongena

The above ingredients are made into coarse powder, boiled with 4 Dronas of water, is reduced to 1 Drona (12.288 ml).
To this decoction, 2 Tulas (9.6 kg) of old jaggery is added.
After it is cooled, 2 Prasthas (2 X 768 g)  of honey is added.
The recipe is then be kept in a jar, the inside a heap of barley for over 1 month.
After fermentation, the liquid is strained out, and to this, 1/2 Pala (24 g) of each of the powder of
Patra – Cinnamomum tamala
Tvak – cinnamon
Ela – Cardamom – Elettaria cardamom
Maricha – Piper nigrum
Hrivera – Pavonia odorata and
Aguru – Aquallria agallocha is added.
This liquid is kept in a jar smeared with honey and ghee till it becomes aromatic
This is given to the patient after the digestion of the food, in a suitable dose depending upon the seriousness of the disease.

Side effects, precautions and over dosage

Side effects:
It is not suitable for people with diarrhoea, because, it contains Danti (Baliospermum montanum), which is a purgative and this product is indicated in constipation.
People with sensitive stomach may feel worsening of gastritis.

Pregnancy, children and lactation:
It can be administered during lactation only for a short period of 2 – 3 weeks, in a low dose of 5- 10 ml, mixed with equal quantities of water, after food.
During pregnancy, seek doctors advice. Can be taken for a short period of a month, in low dose.
It can be administered in children above 8 years of age.

Over-dosage:
May cause diarrhea and gastritis.

Shelf life: 10 years from the date of manufacture.

Store in a cool dry place, away from sunlight.
Keep out of reach and sight of children.

  1. Can “PITTA” people with “acquagenic pruritus” the bath itching problem take this.Would it help with the ailment . In this some pricking sensation occurs once a body part is exposed to water. It generally happens after one takes a bath . The itching lasts for about 10 minutes. There is no symptomatic change in the skin.

  4. Punarnava has anti-inflammatory properties then why can’t it be used in Gastritis? Gastritis = inflammation in inner lining of the stomach. Please answer my query

  5. I do have same question of punarnavarisht that is it really harmful to take in gastric..? whereas in other sites says punarnavarisht has proven cure for gastritis… Please provide fully furnished suggestions only…
