  3. Dear Dr.Hebbar,

Can you please tell me what are all the side effects of Sheerabala thailam (101) and its contraindications? Who should not take this? I came to learn that it should be avoided in people with high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Is that right? Can people with mild hypertension take this? Does it have any gastrointestinal side effects like indigestion or diarrhoea? Can it be taken by people with lactose intolerance? Generally who will benefit by this medicine? Kindly advise. I am a medical doctor practising allopathy and a few patients come to me taking this medicine too. Kindly enlighten me on this subject. Thanks.

    • Dear Dr Shajahan,
It should only be avoided in people with very high cholesterol. In mild high lipid conditions, it can be prescribed.
Same is also true with blood pressure.
It is usually is well tolerated by stomach and intestine. However, it is good to drink a cup of luke warm water after taking this medicine.
If someone is gluten allergic / milk allergic, then he can also show some gastritis symptoms with this medicine, because of milk ingredient.

  15. Kshirabalatailam oil by Kottakkal co. was very effective in treating nummular dermatitis on my legs. I massaged the oil onto the affected areas after bathing, and it was absorbed readily. For some reason, Desoximetasone cream 0.25% prescribed by my very fine US medical professionals was not controlling the outbreak while I was traveling in India. I was fortunate to be prescribed this product by the ayurvedic doctor at Ananda in the Himalayas.

Me and my mother were prescribed ksheerabala 101 for different reasons. I was taking because I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue and my mother has vertigo and knee pain. We experience heavy drowsiness after taking the capsule. Sleep is prolonged for over 12 hours. The dosage is 1 capsule after food, with warm water. Will the drowsiness pass over time? Right now she is taking only 1 capsule per day and I have stopped because of this.

    Reply
    • Hi, if it is causing drowsiness for 12 hours, then it is better to reduce its dose to just one capsule per day. Try it for 2 weeks time. If there are no improvements, ask your doctor for alternatives.

    • Hello Madam, Just after the abhyanga and swedana, Hot water bath is advised. One should not keep the oil for a longer time. If you have a reaction to this oil do let the doctor so that he/she might change the oil for you.

Note: Because we all are genetically different with different constitutions and patterns, we respond to treatments in many different ways. Hence Standard Ayurvedic Treatments are always individually formulated.
